Kolkata: Friends and colleagues on Sunday bade a tearful farewell to nurses Remya Rajan and Vineetha P K who laid down their lives while saving patients from the fire that ravaged the Annexe-I block of the AMRI Hospital here.
Over a hundred friends and colleagues of the two attended a prayer service at St Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church here to pay tributes to Remya and Vineetha.
Parish priest of the church Fr Joshy Myenparambil said the prayer service began at 8 a.m. The bodies of Remya and Vineetha were brought to the church in coffins at 9.05 a.m. "From then on, the bodies were kept there for their friends and colleagues from the nursing fraternity to pay respects. A large number of people, even from some far-flung areas, attended. They paid floral tributes to their friends and prayed for them," Fr Joshy said. The priest, who was at the hospital ever since the news broke of a fire there, had remained with the bodies till they were released after post mortem.
"We have a Jesus Youth Ministry programme which has about 2,500 members from the nursing community. Both Remya and Vineetha were quite involved in the programmes and had many friends. They had attended the last social gathering we organised on November 12," he said. After the memorial service, the bodies were escorted to the airport by members of the Kolkata Malayalee Association.
