Sindhu, 21, went down to Sun Yu of China 15-21 17-21 in just 49 minutes on the second day of the prestigious year-ending tournament.

The China Super Series Premier champion failed to repeat her Fuzhou final performance against the World No. 6 Chinese and conceded the Gropu B's top spot to her rival with the defeat.

It was there sixth meeting, and they now have 3-3 wins each. In their last meeting, the Rio Olympics silver medallist beat Yu in the China Open final in three grueling games.

Yesterday, Sindhu had defeated higher-ranked Akane Yamaguchi of Japan during her opening match.

Sindhu now plays World No 2 and Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain in her final group match.

Two top players from each group progress to next round, and now a win is the bare minimum for the Indian shuttler to keep her hopes alive.

Yu, who defeated Marin in their first game, has two points with a score of 4:0 against Sindhu, who has 1 point with a score of 2:3.
