Mumbai: The Indian rugby team led by Nasser
Hussain had a good tune-up for the October Commonwealth Games
in Delhi by winning the Bee`s Rugby 7`s tournament at Bradford
in England.
India defeated favourites Yorkshire Select Green 26-24
by scoring a try in the dying moments of the final after
trailing 21-24, a media release said today.
The tournament included top English club teams like
Yorkshire All Stars, British Asian Rugby Association and the
Bees and was also a part of the Indian team`s ten-day training
programme in the UK before the October 3-14 CWG.
The team was undefeated in the league stage and also won
a thrilling match against host side Bradford and Bingley (The
Bees), winning 16-14 by scoring a try in the final minutes
after trailing 11-14.
The tournament had two leagues of 4 teams, each playing
every other team and the top team from each league played in
the final.
The India `A` team also took part, winning one match and
losing the other two in the league stage.
"This is the second tournament in a row we have won, the
first being the Istanbul 7’s, this tournament was tougher and
winning this tournament is a fantastic morale booster for the
team," Indian team skipper Nasser Hussain said.
"We are heading back to India now and then we leave for
the Shanghai 7’s which is one of the top Asian Rugby
tournaments," he added.
