New Delhi: Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar created history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics.

The 22-year-old Tripura girl completed her performance at the final qualifier and Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janiero and finished ninth in the first of the four subdivisions of the women`s artistic category, thus qualifying for the Rio Olympics 2016.

Earlier, Karmakar was unable to clinch an Olympic berth in the World Championships in November as she finished outside the podium.
