Dipa, who became the first Indian athlete to reach a vault final, won millions of hearts by executing the Produnova once again in style.

Even though the 23-year-old finished fourth, her effort was laudable considering it was her first Olympic event.

Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu were two another shuttlers who pulled off a win on Day 9.

Srikanth defeated Henri Hurskainen of Sweden 21-6, 21-18 in his group H preliminaries match. He had earlier beaten Lino Munoz of Mexico 2-0 in his opening match of the quadrennial event.

PV Sindhu, on the other hand, survived a tough match.

In Group M women’s singles, Sindhu pulled off a 19-21 21-15 21-17 win over Glasgow Commonwealth Games champion Li Michelle in a match that lasted for 72 minutes.

Barring these performances, it was a disappointing day for Indian athletes as big names were knocked out of the tournament one after the other.
