Lucknow: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) SY Qureshi will on Friday review preparations in the state for Assembly Elections scheduled to be held in March.
He will be accompanied with two Election Commissioners during his visit to the poll-bound state.
During the day-long visit, the full commission would interact with the representatives of the political parties and discuss with the district and state officials. Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said that the CEC and the two ECs would hold talks with the representatives of different political parties between 1000 hrs and 1130 hrs followed by a meeting with the Divisional Commissioners and District Returning Officers (D).
CEC visit has been rescheduled as earlier he was expected to hold the review meetings in Agra on November 30 and December 1.
The Election Commission is presently engaged in the revision of the electoral rolls which will be published on January 1, 2012. More than 20 million new voters have been registered in the voters list of the state, which has now crossed 120 million. The proposed visit of the EC team, led by CEC, assumes significance as now only less than six months time is left for the assembly elections as the first sitting of the state assembly was held on May 21, 2007.
As per the constitutional provision, the EC is empowered to announce the poll schedule within six months of the completion of five years of the state government from the date of first sitting of Assembly.
Model code of conduct will come into being after the announcement of poll schedule and subsequent notification. Meanwhile, two election commissioners H C Brahma and V S Sampat is expected to reach the state.
