Tokyo: Poland`s Magda Linette dumped Kazakhstan`s Zarina Diyas out of the Japan Women`s Open on Thursday as seeds continued to tumble at the rain-hit event.
Linette completed an upset 6-2, 7-5 victory over her second-seeded opponent to reach the quarter-finals of the $250,000 hardcourt tournament on Tokyo Bay.
Organisers have already seen top seed Carla Suarez Navarro crash out along with Japan`s Kimiko Date-Krumm, who at least did better than the Spaniard by winning her opening match.
Linette`s win leaves American Madison Brengle as the highest-ranked player, although the world number 42 faces a tricky test in the last eight on Friday against Croatia`s Ajla Tomljanovic.
In other second-round results, Ukraine`s Kateryna Bondarenko beat Australian Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a see-saw match while Taiwan`s Hsieh Su-Wei bundled out local favourite Kurumi Nara 6-2, 6-4.
There was joy for mainland China too with Zheng Saisai brushing aside American Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-2 in the late match.
