On Andy Murray being World No. 1: Like a true sportsman, Novak Djokovic congratulates Briton on top ranking
Murray`s climb to the ATP rankings` summit caps a remarkable year which has seen him win a second Wimbledon crown and mount a successful defence of his Olympic title in Rio.
New Delhi: He might have been at the receiving end in several crucial matches of Grand Slams against Novak Djokovic, but Britain's Andy Murray scaled new heights as he dethroned the Serb as the World No. 1 few days back.
Murray became the new world number one on Saturday after Milos Raonic withdrew from their Paris Masters semi-final because of injury.
The Scot`s climb to the ATP rankings` summit caps a remarkable year which has seen him win a second Wimbledon crown and mount a successful defence of his Olympic title in Rio.
As wishes poured in from all corners, Djokovic, who has been struggling since his French Open triumph earlier this year, also hailed his rival.
Praising Murray's hard work, Nole wrote on his Facebook page, "Congratulations Andy Murray! Very well deserved and hard fought milestone! Your dedication and passion has paid off, and I am really happy to be in the same era with you!"
The Serb also assured his fans that he was working hard to be at his best again and that he is always up for challenges.
"As to all my #NoleFam, thank you for being there for me. I am working hard and will see you all in London! I am always game when it comes to good challenges and final 8 is exactly that. See you in a few days!" he said.
Andy Murray celebrated his new world number one ranking with a first Paris Masters title on Sunday after defeating American John Isner 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 in the final.
It was Murray's eighth title in a remarkable season where he has now extended his winning run to 19 matches.
"This has been an incredible journey for me to get to the top of the rankings," said Murray, who will move 405 points above long-time rival Djokovic.
It is the Briton`s fourth title in succession after wins in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna and his 14th career Masters 1000 triumph.
