Man sent to jail for 15 days for bounced cheque
A man has been sentenced to 15 days in jail by a Delhi court for dishonouring of his cheque worth Rs 25,000 due to insufficient fund in his account.

in jail by a Delhi court for dishonouring of his cheque worth Rs 25,000 due to insufficient fund in his account.
Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Gupta also ordered convict Alok Kumar, a city resident, to pay Rs 34,000 as compensation to the complainant.
"Keeping in view the facts and circumstances of the case and also the object behind enactment of section 138 (dishonour of cheque for insufficient funds in account) of the Negotiable Instruments Act, the convict is sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for a period of 15 days.
"Further, the convict is directed to pay a compensation of Rs 34,000 to the complainant within a period of 30 days from today. In case of default in payment of the compensation amount, the convict shall further undergo simple imprisonment for a period of 6 months," the court held. The court passed the orders on a complaint filed by Vinod Kumar Verma, a Delhi resident, who had alleged that Singh had taken a "friendly loan" of Rs 25,000 from him in 2006 but the cheque issued to pay back the money was dishonoured with remarks "insufficient funds" in the same year.
The accused had denied the allegations contending that he had issued the cheque as earnest money for a property deal. He said the property deal could not materialise as they failed to agree on the price but the cheque was not returned to him by the complainant, a property dealer, and he threatened him instead of arrest.
The complainant, however, rebutted it saying it was "nothing but a bundle of lies".
The court after going through various documents submitted by the complainant, convicted Kumar, observing that "despite the service of notice, the accused failed to make payment within the stipulated period".
