While most of the players tend to attack the second serve with a powerful forehand from the baseline, the Swiss legend has adopted a new strategy - to dart forward to the edge of the service line, return the serve off a half-volley to bamboozle his opponents.

In the Cincinnati final which Federer won 7-6 (1), 6-3 against Djokovic, the Serb's coach Boris Becker too looked flabbergasted with the Swiss' new shot.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion used the shot during practice and his coach Stefan Edberg encouraged him to continue playing it. It is definitely a tricky shot which is confusing the best of the players.

It remains to be seen whether the new innovation can help the Swiss maestro win a sixth US Open title.
