Jammu: The day-long bandh called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad here to protest against the alleged failure of district administration in taking action against miscreants who attacked a religious procession in Rajouri town, passed off peacefully on Saturday.
"There were no reports of any untoward incident during the bandh," a senior police official said.
Shops in Jammu remained closed during the bandh hours and the flow of traffic came to a virtual standstill. Members of VHP, BJP, Sri Ram Sena and Kranti Dal took out processions and set ablaze effigies to express their anger against police crackdown on protesters. Several political, trade, social, transport and religious organisations extended their support to the day-long bandh.
Border towns of Sunderbani, Noushera also observed bandh. "Our protest was against the police atrocities on minority community and its failure to initiate the required action against miscreants," State VHP Chief Dr Rama Kant Dubey said, adding that the bandh has been called off after a state delegation accepted their demands. A state delegation led by Health Minister and senior Congress leader Sham Lal Sharma held a 16-hour-long meeting with members of two communities.
"Demands of compensation, withdrawal of FIRs, probe into incident and the shifting of Deputy Commissioner and SSP have been accepted," Sharma said.
Meanwhile, shops opened after the 10-day-long curfew was lifted today in Rajouri, about 140 km from here.
Curfew was imposed in Rajouri town on March 8 after some unidentified persons pelted stones at a religious procession, prompting security personnel to fire tear gas shells to disperse them.
The stone-hurlers were protesting against VHP International president Praveen Togadia`s remarks which, they alleged, had hurt sentiments of a particular community.
Seventeen people were arrested for their alleged involvement in the violence. A major clash was witnessed between people and police on March 15, leaving several injured on both sides.
