Wimbledon 2016: Leander Paes enters doubles 2nd-round, likely to meet Rohan Boapanna in pre-quarters
Paes` Rio Olympics partner, Rohan Bopanna also entered the second round of the competition.
New Delhi: Indian legend Leander Paes and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski entered the second round of the men's doubles event at 2016 Wimbledon on Friday.
The Indo-Polish pair cantered to an easy 6-1, 6-3 win over Taipei's Lu Yen-hsun and Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in a rain-hit opening round contest on Day 5 that lasted mere 42 minutes.
Paes and Matkowski will next face either Henri Kontinen-John Peers or Nicholas Monroe-Donald Young for a spot in the third round.
Paes' Rio Olympics partner, Rohan Bopanna also entered the second round of the competition. Bopanna and his doubles partner Florin Mergea progressed after a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (6) win over Croatian pair of Marin Draganja and Nikola Mektic in the opening round.
Paes and Bopanna are likely to face each other at the pre-quarterfinals as they have been drawn in the top half of the draw at the men's doubles event.
Paes and Bopanna are the only Indians competing in the men's events at the All England Club as Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni had lost in the singles qualifiers while the pair of Purav Raja and Divij Sharan had lost in the doubles qualifying event.
In the women's doubles, top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have German team of Anna-Lena Friedsam and Laura Siegmund as their first round opponents.
