The findings shed more light on how internet service providers have battled for years to track down and stop the distribution of sexually explicit images that are against their community guidelines. The size of the seller network as a whole, according to Stanford researchers, fluctuates between 500 and 1,000 accounts at any given time. To stop predators from locating and connecting with adolescents, Meta claimed to have stringent procedures and technologies in place. Along with the task force, the company reported that between 2020 and 2022 it had taken down 27 harmful networks. In January, it also disabled more than 490,000 accounts for breaking its child safety rules.
The investigation concluded that other tech platforms, in addition to Instagram, played a part in the dissemination and sale of child-sexified images. For instance, it was discovered that while Twitter seemed to be more actively removing them, accounts advocating self-produced child sexual assault content were also widely spread on the social media network. According to the investigation, many Instagram accounts also shared connections to Telegram and Discord groups, some of which appeared to be run by specific vendors.
