Varanasi: Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the violence on the campus of the Banaras Hindu University, state Power Minister Shrikant Sharma announced on Tuesday.

Sharma alleged that some outsiders created trouble at the prestigious university.


Speaking to mediapersons after a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader assured that the state government will take strict action the guilty.


Tension prevailed at the BHU campus here after an agitation by woman students, protesting molestation of a student, turned violent late on Saturday when police used force to disperse the protesters.


The violence erupted after some students, protesting against the incident on Thursday, wanted to meet the varsity's vice-chancellor at his residence.


Varanasi Commissioner Nitin Gokarn on Tuesday submitted a report in connection with Saturday`s lathicharge on protesting students in BHU and blamed the university administration for the violence.


Gokarn has in the report, sent to Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar, said that BHU did not deal with the victim`s complaint in a sensitive manner and did not handle the situation on time, said a senior administrative official.
