One Kashmiri militant was nabbed on Thursday from the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district, two days after the arrest of another terrorist from the same district, police said. Jahid Ahmed (40), arrested by the BSF from Khojadanga village under Basirhat police station, was handed over to the police. Ahmed went to Pakistan for training in 1993, police said adding he came to Bangladesh from Pakistan and was entering India en route to Kashmir.
Ahmed was carrying US $1000 when he was arrested. Another suspected Kashmiri militant Ghulam Mahiuddin Bhat was arrested from Taki, along the Indo-Bangladesh border, of the same district on Tuesday. It was prima facie revealed after interrogation that Bhat hailed from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and was on his way to Bangladesh, intelligence sources said on Friday.
Bhat was believed to have direct links with the ISI. He possessed no document or arms at the time of his arrest, they said adding that it was yet to be known which militant outfit he belonged to. Though the sources declined to divulge what was the real intention of Bhat in Bangladesh, they said he chose to cross over the border through West Bengal "since the route from Nepal appears to be risky for him due to strict security." Bhat, now in police remand for 14 days, was given shelter by a person of Tiljala in adjacent South 24 Parganas district who too was taken into police custody.
An alert was sounded along the Indo-Bangladesh border in view of the spurt in the movement of ISI elements.
