The shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small community about 50 kilometers southeast of San Antonio.

As per media reports, the attacker fired as many as ten shots.

The sheriff confirmed that the gunman was taken down.

The shooter is said to have walked into the church shortly before noon - at a morning service attended by some 50 people - and opened fire.

The victims were rushed to the hospital.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump took to Twitter saying, "May God be with the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI and law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan."

Vice President Mike Pence also tweeted and said, "Karen and I send prayers to victims & their families in TX. We grieve with you and stand with resolve against evil. Thank you to the first responders."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott too condoled the church shooting and said, "Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response. More details from DPS soon."

The shooting comes just over a month after a gunman in Las Vegas, firing down from a hotel room, killed 58 people and wounded hundreds attending an outdoor concert.
