Hurricane Irma weakened to a Category Three storm Saturday as it pummeled the north coast of Cuba, but US forecasters said it would likely regain power as it heads to the US state of Florida.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm from a Category Four in its 1500 GMT bulletin, but cautioned that Irma is "forecast to restrengthen while heading for south Florida and the keys."
