Here's is what is confirmed about the incident so far:

* A solitary gunman, believed to be a local, opened fire from the 32nd building of the Mandalay Bay, a hotel-casino.

* He fired at a large gathering of concert-goers numbering at over 10,000. There was panic with people running in every direction to dodge the bullets. Some eyewitnesses say they had to 'wade through cartridges' to escape the onslaught.

* Las Vegas Metro Police officials have said at least 50 have been killed and that another 100 are injured.

* Initial investigations show no connection between the shooter and any international organisation. No motive has been established yet.

* A massive operation was launched to locate and bring down the gunman - a 64-year-old identified as Stephen Paddock.

* The gunman may have had a companion who is wanted for questioning. Her name has officially been released as Marilou Danley and a hunt is on for her. Security officials are also hunting for two cars that may have belonged to the shooter - a Hyundai Tucson Nevada/114B40 and a Chrysler Pacifica Nevada/79D401.

 

 

* Freeways were blocked in the immediate aftermath of the incident but have since been opened.

* Reports of several flights being diverted away from Las Vegas has also been received.

* US President termed the incident as 'tragic', and offered his condolences to the victims and their families in a single Twitter message.
