New Delhi: India`s Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu defeated Spanish top seed Carolina Marin 21-19, 21-16 in the final of the India Open World Superseries badminton championships at the Siri Fort Sports Complex on Sunday.

The clash, which can be termed as a rematch of the 2016 Rio Olympics final, where the Spanish shuttler defeated her Indian counterpart in the final, tasted defeat in straight sets.


Sindhu's incredible performance in the match drew special praise from cricketing greats Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Anil Kumble.

This was not the first meeting between Sindhu and Marin since their classic Olympic clash in August, 2016, in which the Spaniard emerged victorious. Out of the 11 occasions that both these superstars clashed, Sindhu has now won eight times.
