The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels clashed with an infantry unit at a village near the town of Kauswagan last Monday, military spokesmen said. Ten members of the MILF unit and an army corporal were killed and four other soldiers were wounded, they added.

The MILF has stepped up attacks against government forces since the military seized all rebel training bases on Mindanao.
The MILF seized and briefly occupied the municipality of Kauswagan in March in fighting which claimed 21 lives.
Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has linked a Jakarta bomb attack which injured the Philippine ambassador last Tuesday to the security problem in Mindanao, but the MILF has denied involvement.
