60 yrs later, Britain wakes up to give loyal Indian soldier his due
He was spared from being beheaded thrice. All along, Capitain Ghanshyamsinh Gohil never wavered in his loyalty to the Crown. Sixty years after facing imprisonment and possible death, the wido of Gohil -- he died in 1982 -- will receive the reward for his valour, nothing less than 10,000 pounds (16.7 lakh).

Sixty years after facing imprisonment and possible death, the wido of Gohil -- he died in 1982 -- will receive the reward for his valour, nothing less than 10,000 pounds (16.7 lakh).
Captain (later Major General) Gohil was then serving the Crown of England. During World War II, he was held a Priosoner of War (PoW) in Chiangi Prison in Singapore by the Japanese in 1942. Now, the British Government has declared an ex-gratia payment of 10,000 pounds (Rs 6.7 lakh)to the surviving members of ex-servicemen and women who served the Crown and were held prisoners by the Japanese during World War II.
