The government of Bangladesh on Saturday declared Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner Irfan Raja persona non grata for his recent indecorous remarks against the Liberation War and unfriendly activities against the host country and ordered the delinquent diplomat to leave the country immediately, The Independent reported on Sunday.
A remorseless Irfan Raja left Dhaka last night at 10 -30 by a scheduled Bangladesh Biman flight for Dubai en route to Pakistan under tight security. Pakistan’s High Commissioner Iqbal Ahmed Khan was at the airport to see him off. Earlier, the government told the High Commissioner that it would extend necessary cooperation to ensure safe departure of the Deputy High Commissioner. His departure came on the eve of the Victory Day.
Irfan Raja’s derogatory remarks against the liberation war, independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh at a seminar in Dhaka on November 27 triggered a wave of countrywide protest and a demand was made for his immediate expulsion from the country. In the face of mounting pressure, the Pakistan government on November 30 conveyed its decision to withdraw the errant diplomat but did not indicate when he would leave.
That decision was not translated into action even after two weeks leaving Bangladesh with no alternative but to take its own action. Incidentally, Irfan Raza became the first diplomat to be declared persona non grata by the government of Bangladesh.
