He was 78 and is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.
Lakshmanan was admitted to the hospital two months back following a blood clot in his brain, the sources said.
He was the first non-ruling party deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha. He was elected to the post in 1980 and held it till 1984.
Elected to the Lok Sabha as DMK candidate from north Chennai in the 1980 elections, Lakshmanan crossed over to Congress in 1983 when the Congress snapped ties with the DMK. Bureau Report
