The United States has reiterated its support for efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement by September 13 despite the increased fragility of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak`s government.
“We will continue to push both sides to find a way to reach a peace agreement,” said White House spokesman PJ Crowley on Wednesday.
The spokesman was responding to questions from reporters about the implications for the peace process of two sharp political blows to Barak: the resignation of Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy and a preliminary vote by the Knesset, Israel`s Parliament, favoring early elections. The prime minister remains determined to pursue an agreement and he believes that he has the support of the people in that task, said Mr Crowley, declining to comment on levy`s resignation or the parliamentary vote in Israel, saying only: It`s an internal matter. He recognizes that there is an historic opportunity not to be lost, Reeker said. The decisions are extremely difficult for the parties. We remain very much committed to help. Report : Zeenext Bureau
