With the auspicious Makar Sankranti Snan' scheduled for on Saturday morning at Ganga Sagar, 80,000 pilgrims reached in Kumbhnagar, far less than expectation, as the first two deaths were reported on Saturday. Dasrath Devi (50) of Ayodha and Premchand Soni of New Delhi (60) were pronounced brought dead at the Chenaguri and Kachuberia hospitals, south 24 parganas district magistrate Alapon Bandopadhay told newsmen.
Another 17 pilgrims, suffering from different ailments, were under treatment at hospitals, he said.
“Over 80,000 pilgrims have arrived here since January 10 and more will arrive for tomorrow's holy dip,” The DM said.
Bandopadhay said 1126 buses carrying pilgrims have arrived at lot no 8 and another 154 at the Namkhana Jetty.
District Superintendent of Police A K Maliwal said 28 persons were arrested for various offences from the mela grounds while three unauthorised launches were seized and two diverted for violating their routes.
The district administration, which is expecting 2.5 lakh pilgrims, has made foolproof arrangements for Saturday’s holy dip.
