US coast guards intercepted 20 undocumented Cuban emigratns. Thirteen other Cubans were intercepted in three separate groups between July 25-28 south of Florida and were repatriated Tuesday to Bahia Cabanas, Cuba. To curb illegal departures from Cuba, Havana and Washington signed accords in 1994 and 1995 which grant 20,000 US immigrant visas to Cubans per year, but require that the United States repatriate Cubans who emigrate illegally and are picked up on the high seas. But unlike Haitians and others, Cubans who reach US soil illegally can normalise their status and work immediately in the United States thanks to the Cuban Adjustment Act which has been fully in effect since 1966. The US coast guard intercepted 20 undocumented Cuban emigrants as they tried to reach the coast of Florida, a spokesman said. The Cubans were picked up on Saturday by a coast guard vessel near marquesas key, the spokesman said.

The Cuban government charges the US is encouraging illegal emigration with the act.
