Mumbai: Bollywood has developed a new fascination for biopics and has narrated inspiring success stories of quite a few personalities including Milkha Singh, Mary Kom, Neerja Bhanot and Mahendra Singh Dhoni – to name a few. Filmmakers have even taken inspiration from real-life incidents to add value to their story – one such film is Dangal which is based on the struggles of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita.

Moviegoers, who like watching biopics can look forward to number of films in the genre in 2018 and the following year.


Here’s taking a look at some of the noteworthy ones:


Padman



R Balki’s Padman starring Akshay Kumar is based on Padma Shri Arunachalam Muruganantham’s inspiring initiative to create awareness about menstrual hygiene among women in rural India. He played a pivotal role in creating affordable sanitary pads for women from the poorer strata of the society by supplying cost-effective machines. Padman, which is slated to release on January 26, also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor.


Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi



Based on one of the most courageous woman warriors of India – Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Directed by Krish, the film also stars Ankita Lokhande, Sonu Sood, Atul Kulkarni and Nihar Pandya in pivotal roles. The film is slated to release on April 27.


Super 30



Hrithik Roshan is all set to play mathematician Anand Kumar in a biopic titled Super 30. Kumar is known for Super 30, a programme that helps students crack IIT entrance tests. Directed by Vikas Bahl, Super 30 has been backed by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Film. The film’s tentative release date is November 23.


Sanjay Dutt Biopic



Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, the Rajkumar Hirani directorial has been in news since its inception. The film which also stars Da Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal and Manisha Koirala, will highlight the highs and lows in Dutt’s life.


Abhinav Bindra Biopic



Real-life father-son duo Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor have been roped in to play Senior and Junior Bindra in a biopic. Harshvardhan, who had made his debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirziya in 2016 will be seen as 2008 Beijing Olympics Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra in the film which will revolve around the bond between a father and son.


Saina Nehwal Biopic



After playing Haseena Parkar in a biopic, Shraddha Kapoor is all set to portray badminton champion Saina Nehwal in a film. Directed by Amol Gupte, the film will retell the success story of Nehwal, who has won accolades aplenty for the country at various championships.


The Accidental Prime Minister



Starring Anupam Kher as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, The Accidental Prime Minister is an adaptation of a namesake book written by Sanjaya Baru. Hansal Mehta, who is writing the film adaptation of book during an interview said that the movie will have a balanced account of Dr Manmohan Singh's stint as PM. The first look of the film had garnered massive response and is slated to release on December 21.


Kapil Dev Biopic



Kabir Khan is all set to helm a film based on India’s first World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev. Bollywood’s bundle of energy – Ranveer Singh as been roped in to play the Haryana Hurricane in the film titled ’83. Jointly produced by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films in association with Vibri Media and Kabir Khan Films ’83 will release on April 5, 2019.


Salute – Rakesh Sharma

A film based on Rakesh Sharma - India’s first astronaut to visit the moon – is on the anvil. Aamir Khan, who was roped in to play the lead role has reportedly walked out of the film. Reports now suggest that Shah Rukh Khan will be essaying the role.


Thackeray



Nawazuddin Siddiqui will play Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray in a biopic titled Thackeray. Popularly known as Bala Saheb,Thackeray was one of the iconic politicians who started his career as a cartoonist and social worker. Later he formed the regional political party in Maharashtra. Produced by Sanjay Raut and directed by Abhijit Phanse, Thackeray which will showcase the life and times of the tall leader will release on January 23, 2019.


PV Sindhu biopic



Actor Sonu Sood will be producing a film based on PV Sindhu’s success story and he wishes to have Deepika Padukone on board to play the badminton champion, became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal in 2016.
