The film which was earlier titled Padmavati is inspired by Padmavat, a piece of fiction penned by 16th century Awadhi poet Malik Muhammed Jayasi.

The film revolves around Khilji’s obsession for Rani Padmavati (played by Deepika Padukone), his lust for power and his greed for overpowering the world by deceit.

Also starring Anupriya Goenka (as Rani Nagmati- Maharawal's first wife), Raza Murad (as Jallaluddin Khilji), Jim Sarbh (Malik Kafur) and Aditi Rao Hydari (Mehr-un-Nisa - wife of Alauddin Khilji), Padmaavat comes across as an exceptional piece of art on celluloid.

The film, which was previously slated to release on December 1, 2017, has been in the eye of storm since its inception. Several Rajput organisations protested against the film’s release and even demanded a ban on the SLB directorial over its content. The community feels that the filmmaker has distorted history and misrepresented facts.

Padmaavat was also stuck at the Central Board of Film Certification and hadn’t been certified for screening on time. And hence it took a while for the makers to zero in on January 25 as the new date of release.

Protests continue despite Supreme Court’s order

At least 16 people have been arrested by the police from Gujarat`s Ahmedabad on Tuesday, after a frenzied mob went on a rampage outside Himalaya Mall in the city to protest against the release of Padmaavat.

The police took an immediate action and managed the situation. "16 people have been arrested and their interrogation is underway. The CCTV footage will be examined and more arrests will be made", confirmed a senior official to the media.

The official has also requested the people to keep a control on their emotions and not to take law and order in their hands. "We deployed proper security in all the theatres, where the movie will be released. It is our responsibility to give proper security to the theatres as the Supreme Court has allowed the screening of Padmaavat in the state," added the official.
