Islamabad, Aug 10: Taliban guerrillas are planning to extend their insurgency against government and western targets to Afghanistan's north, two spokesmen for the guerrillas were quoted saying today.
Interviewed by the news English-language daily, Mohammad Amin and Mohammad Mukhtar Mujahid said the ousted militia's fighters had already begun striking targets in the north, and would intensify the northern campaign in coming weeks. The guerrillas, believed to be operating with al-Qaeda remnants and fighters loyal to renegade Islamist rebel Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, have been waging a bloody campaign of grenade and rocket attacks against US-led coalition troops, western aid agencies and Afghans loyal to President Hamid Karzai for months. Amin named a squad of three former Taliban commanders who have set up in northern Faryab province to undermine the power of northern strongman and deputy defence minister, the anti-Taliban Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostam.
"All three have reached Faryab to organise resistance against Dostam and other pro-US commanders. You would hear about their military operations in the future," Amin was quoted as saying.

He named Mullah Mohammad Asim Muttaqi, Qari Mohammad Usman Mullah Abdul Salam Haideri as the new Taliban squad in Faryab.
