Jaipur, June 05: Assailing BJP's proposal to set up a national commission on reservation to economically backward castes (EBCs), the CPI today demanded that an all party meet should be convened to evolve consensus and modalities on the issue. "BJP's move is mere an eyewash, irrelevant and would be a futile exercise on the eve of assembly polls," CPI general secretary A B Bardhan told reporters here.

"This would be a futile exercise as there are thousands of commissions are already working in the country, and neither anyone has come up with any timely report, nor the Centre has accepted them in toto," he said.

If consensus is evolved on the issue at an all party meet then a minor Constitutional amendment would be required to maintain equality, socially and economically for forward classes, he said.

However, the existing reservation for SC/ST and OBCs should not be diluted in any form, he added.

He said poor people were being already marginalised from the main stream due to privatisation and disinvestment.

On the political situation in Uttar Pradesh, he said a pre-poll alliance among Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Kalyan Singh's Kranti Party would be a good indication and it would help breaking the BJP and allies atleast at the national level.
