The Tata Nano was upgraded last year with a better interior package, an AMT automatic gearbox and visual upgrades that include new bumpers at the front and back. But Tata Motors already has plans to upgrade the Nano even further with a brand new interior that is more in line with the one available in the Tiago hatchback today.

The next generation Nano could get the internal nomenclature "Pelican" which was originally given to the Tata Ace Zip. The new Nano will get various upgrades both on the exterior and the interior. As we mentioned before, it will get a new dashboard that is similar to the one you get in the Tiago. The new Nano will also get a conventional instrument cluster that will be placed right behind the steering wheel. The steering wheel itself might be the same one that you get in the current Nano but could get features like steering mounted audio and telephone controls. The new car will also get a better infotainment system and could even get the touchscreen setup that comes in the Bolt and Zest in order to spec it similar to the likes of the Renault Kwid.

In terms of mechanical changes, the new Nano will get a larger set of 13-inch wheels as compared to the 12-inch ones you get on the car today. The new Nano will also get an updated and larger 3-cylinder engine with horsepower output that is rumored to be between the 60-80PS range. Other upgrades will include better brakes and an updated suspension that will help keep the more powerful car on tarmac much better than now.

From the pictures, other upgrades seem to be additions of a centrally mounted windshield washer nozzle (the current gen car already has a slot for this) and new headlamps. Features like daytime running lights could be given a miss but Tata could spring a surprise and add them just to add to the exterior package upgrades. All said and done, this upgrade to the Nano platform will be one that we will be monitoring closely.

In terms of placement, the car will be priced between the current GenX Nano and the Tiago. Expect pricing to be between the Rs 2.5-3.5 lakh range, which will put it straight up against the Datsun Redi-Go and the Renault Kwid.
