The Sensex traded at 31,230.55 at 1145 hours, up 70.74 points, or 0.23 per cent.
The broader Nifty was also higher by 11.25 points, or 0.12 per cent, at 9,747 at 1145 hours.
Dr Reddy's went up 3.58 per cent, ITC 1.28 per cent, Coal India 1.25 per cent and Sun Pharma 1.04 per cent.
Gold held steady on Thursday after hitting a more than one-month low, pressured by the increasing likelihood of a U.S. interest rate hike in December and as a new tax plan boosted the dollar on the back of stronger economic data.
The 30-share flagship index was down 44.27 points, or 0.14 per cent, at 31,115.54.
The gauge had fallen 1,263.95 points in the previous seven sessions.
BSE indices led by oil and gas, PSU, consumer durables, auto, healthcare, metal and bank stocks declined by up to 2.07 per cent.
The 50-share NSE Nifty turned lower by 43.10 points, or 0.44 per cent, at 9,692.65.
The rupee took more blows today as it slipped 16 paise to a fresh six and a half month low of 65.88 against the dollar that gained clout overseas on talk of a US rate hike and the prospect of monetary stimulus pullout.
Gold rose on Thursday after falling to one-month lows on expectations of a rise in U.S. interest rates this year, while platinum fell to a discount against palladium for the first time since 2001 on waning demand for diesel cars.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 51-scrip Nifty, which had closed at 9,735.75 points, was quoting at 9,709.80 points, down by 25.95 points or 0.27 per cent.
The Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, which had closed at 31,159.81 points on Wednesday, opened higher at 31,216.36 points.
Minutes into trading, it was quoting at 31,148.35 points, down by 11.46 points, or 0.04 per cent.
