Tough battle for Bayern to retain Bundesliga title
Munich, July 18: Franz Beckenbauer, the president of Bayern Munich, yesterday predicted that the German champions will face stiff competition as they set about trying to retain their Bundesliga title.
Munich, July 18: Franz Beckenbauer, the president of Bayern Munich, yesterday predicted that the German champions will face stiff competition as they set about trying to retain their Bundesliga title.
In the 2002/03 campaign Bayern cruised to yet another German crown but 'The Kaiser' expects Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Hertha Berlin to push the Bavarians all the way this time around.
"I'm certain these teams will compete with Bayern once again this season," Beckenbauer told 'TV Movie' magazine.
As for the relegation tussle, something alien to Bayern, Beckenbauer predicts a tough ride for a number of clubs, in particular the promoted trio of FC Cologne, Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
"Half of the league will fight against relegation," declared Beckenbauer. "The newcomers Cologne, Freiburg and Frankfurt will find it especially difficult."
