New Delhi, Aug 25: Hoping that the milk shortage in the city would ease in a couple of days, Delhi government today said it would impose a ban on the sale of milk products and declare skimmed milk an essential commodity if situation continued. "As of today the supply is 96-98 per cent of the total demand of around 40 lakh litres. If in a day or two the situation did not improve, we will impose a ban on the sale of milk products and would declare skimmed milk as an essential commodity," development minister Haroon Yusuf told reporters.

Attributing the shortage of milk in Delhi to the festival and non-availability of skimmed milk powder (SMP), he said "Gujarat Co-operative Milk Federation has assured us the supply of 50,000 litres of fresh milk and 20,000 metric tonnes of SMP for Delhi per day."

Yusuf said that a group of officers comprising Jalaj Srivastava (special secretary, transport), G S Chaturvedi (additional secretary, F&S), Ujwal Mishra (DCP, special branch) and Rajiv Kale (additional secretary, home) has been constituted for constantly monitoring the situation.
The minister also appealed to the citizens not to indulge in over buying and stocking of milk.
