Paris, Sept 14: French firemen have rescued dozens of holidaymakers who were trapped in some 50 pedal-boats on a lake in southern France after strong Mistral winds prevented them from returning to shore, police said.
"The strong winds, blowing at up to 80 kmph (50 mph), caught the boat riders by total surprise. They weren't able to pedal hard enough to reach the bank," said a spokesman for police in the town of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, north of Toulon. Some holidaymakers had to wait for three hours inside a gorge the wind had carried them into before local firemen towed them back to shore on Thursday afternoon, he said. Nobody was injured.
