Mumbai, Oct 07: Chairman of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) P D Vani was arrested last night by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the multi-crore answer paper scam following a raid at his residence.

"Incriminating documents have been recovered from his residence", ACB Jt Commissioner of police A P Dhere told a news agency today. Vani is the 17th accused to be arrested in the MPSC scam. Three others including sub-inspector Sanjay Patil are absconding while 16 accused are former MPSC chairman S D Karnik, Hukum Singh Raj Singh Bhati, Gopal Jain, Padmakar Jain, Vishvanath Kelkar, Sunil Daspute, Avinash Sanas, Sunil Patil, Farruq Kadge, Atmaram Karge, Sudhakar Sarode, Baban Kadam, Mohd Kalim, Pramod Kadam, Manisha Nichat and Eknath Vazere. Police had filed chargesheet against 13 accused on September 25 and sought permission to file supplementary chargesheet against others later. According to prosecution the accused had conspired to replace answer sheets of 399 students, who had appeared for the written examination conducted by MPSC for the post of police sub-inspector, sales tax inspector and assistant in Mantralaya.

The accused had allegedly collected bribe ranging from Rs three lakh to five lakh in each case. They had entered MPSC office in the night and replaced answer papers, the prosecution Bureau Report
