New Delhi, Dec 09:Newly elected Delhi Assembly members will meet at the New Secretariat here today evening to elect their leader.
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting will be held at 1600hrs, sources in the chief minister's office said.
Incumbent Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who is almost certain to be re-elected CLP leader, had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday and discussed details of formation of a new government in Delhi.
After the meeting at 10 Janpath on that day, Sheila Dikshit had told reporters that the new assembly would meet before December 12 and denied reports that there was any tussle in the party for ministerial berths in the new government.
The parleys between Sonia and Shiela centered around the constitution of the new council of ministers which has two vacant slots -- one caused by the death of industry minister Deep Chand Bandhu and the other by the defeat of Finance Minister Mahinder Singh Saathi in the December 1 assembly polls. The post of deputy speaker is also to be filled as Kiran Chaudhary has lost her seat.
Sheila Dikshit, according to sources close to her, is expected to retain four ministers of the outgoing government. They are power and transport minister Ajay Maken, Civil Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf, Health Minister A K Walia and Education Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.
Speculations doing the rounds in the political circles are that Narendra Nath, Prahlad Singh Sahni, Arvinder Singh lovely and Krishna Tirath could be inducted either in the new cabinet or as deputy speaker.
Present speaker Subash Chopra is expected to retain his post. With her election as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) being a mere formality, Sheila Dikshit becoming the Chief Minister for a second time is a foregone conclusion.
According to political observers, there is widespread appreciation of the spectacular work done by Sheila Dikshit during her tenure which led the party to a resounding victory at the hustings. The Congress won 47 of the 70 assembly seats.
The CLP meeting, according to party sources, will take this into account and in all probability endorse her name for the chief ministership.
