Dhaka, June 25: Bangladesh may accord official recognition to the Jewish state of Israel in exchange for certain trade concessions from the United States. "We (Bangladesh) would do it (recognise Israel) if it helps bring about peace in the Middle East, foreign minister M Morshed Khan told a private television channel adding a decision on the issue would be taken shortly.
Khan, however, said that country had not yet made a final decision on sending troops to Iraq and that the matter was still under scrutiny.
Bangladesh had not rejected the proposal of sending troops for the reconstruction and peacekeeping work in Iraq, even though there was considerable opposition to the proposal, he was quoted as saying by the vernacular daily "Janakantha".
