Panaji, Oct 02: The board of enquiry into yesterday's mid-air collision of two naval reconnaissance aircraft will find out whether there was human error or "catastrophic failure" of some gadgets or engine, Naval Chief Admiral Madhvendra Singh said today.

Talking to reporters at the site of the crash that killed 17 people, including 12 crew members, he said there could be a number of reasons behind the mishap which has resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in capability in this category "which is very, very large." He said this was a serious operational limitation that has come about because the navy had five aircraft of this type of which two have been lost.

"Might be a malfunction in one of the planes because of which it went out of control, there may be a catastrophic failure of some gadgets or engine. It could be a pilot error or human error," he said. Stating that there was no doubt that the mishap occurred because of a mid-air collision, he said why that collision occurred was what the board of inquiry has to find out.

No time frame has been given to the board for submitting its report, the naval chief, who inspected the site of the crash at Vasco during his brief visit to the state, said. He said at today's market rate each aircraft lost in the mishap would cost between Rs 400 crore and Rs 500 crore while they were acquired for around Rs 180 crores each when they were inducted into the navy 25 years back.
