Dhaka, Oct 01: An elected ward commissioner of Dhaka city corporation belonging to ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and his bodyguard were shot at in broad day light today in the capital's Mohammadpur area, police said. Ahmed Raju was attacked near his office at Mohammadpur town hall, according to witnesses.

He received two shots and was taken to combined military hospital. Unconfirmed reports say the bodyguard has died of bullet wounds. Raju, in his early forties, is the fourth among the 90 commissioners elected in last April to have been shot at.

Three have died so far, the latest being Shahadat Hossain Sikar, shot on Sunday.

The incident took place even as security have been beefed in the capital in preparation of the first anniversary of the formation of four-party alliance government. The shooting took place on the anniversary of the controversial elections in which Awami League led by previous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faced a humiliating defeat.

Begum Khaleda Zia-led alliance government was installed on October 10 last year after the general elections held on October 1.

The attack follows the Saturday twin blasts in Satkhira district that borders West Bengal, which injured hundreds. Six suspects arrested in connection with the bomb blast case have been put on remand and police is looking for a leader of opposition Awami League for his alleged involvement in the incident, press reports said today.
