Australia vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI: Record-breaking David Warner destroys Kiwis again to seal 3-0 series win
Australia have won the first two matches, by 68 and 116 runs at Sydney and Canberra respectively in their 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand.
New Delhi: A dominant Australian side reclaimed the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with dangerous David Warner creating his own records in the third and final ODI match against New Zealand in Melbourne on Friday.
Warner almost carried his bat through the innings as the opener got run out of the last ball of the Australian innings. By then the 30-year-old has done what he wanted and destroyed the Kiwis in front of a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCC) crowd.
He hit 13 fours and four sixes to his 128-ball 156. It's his second back-to-back hundreds, thus becoming the first Australian to do so.
It was also his seventh hundred of the calendar year, and shared the record with former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who achieved the feat in 2000. The record for most ODI hundreds in a calendar year still belongs to Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who hit nine centuries in 1998.
Warner's 156 outscored 108 runs scored by his team-mate. Next highest scorer was Travis Head, with 37 from 70 balls.
New Zealand started sprightly with Trent Boult running through the Aussie top-order. He registered an impressive figure of 10-1-49-3. Sharing the new ball with him, Tim Southee did well to restrict the scoring rate. But the 27-year old was wicket-less from his spell of 10 overs.
Mitchell Santner and Colin de Grandhomme took two wicket each as New Zealand restricted Australia for a fighting total.
Martin Guptil and Tom Latham provided a solid foundation to the chase by establishing a 44-runs opening stand. But the fall of Latham to Pat Cummins started a Kiwi collapse in Melbourne.
Gutpill was once again New Zealand's top scorer, but his 34 was too little even ignite a fight back. Next highest scorer was his opening partner Latham with 28. Skipper Kane Williamson, like his Aussie counterpart failed. Williamson scored 13 off 12, while Smith could managed only a duck after facing ten balls.
Mitchell Starc took three wickets, conceding only 34 runs in a miserly spell of ten overs.
Four other bowlers used by Smith returned with wickets. But the most impressive of those four was James Faulkner, who took two wickets for 26 runs from seven overs.
Pat Cummins and Head also took two wickets each.
Australia have won the first two matches, by 68 and 116 runs at Sydney and Canberra respectively in their 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand.
