The opening session began with Mark Wood inflicting some early damage in the Indian camp as he went on to remove in-form batsmen KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Indian skipper Virat Kohli also failed to put up a fight and was sent back to the pavilion on 20 by Sam Curran.

Just when it felt like the troubles were mounting on the Indian camp, a brilliant fightback by Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane restored normalcy. The pair added 100 runs for the fourth wicket before Pujara was dismissed by Wood on 45. After Pujara's dismissal, Rahane too was sent back to the pavilion soon as he was dismissed on 61 by Moeen Ali, which reduced India to 167/5.

Ali then went on to remove Ravindra Jadeja pushing India on backfoot.

Meanwhile, England on Day 3 fought back in the contest and the credit for this goes to their skipper Joe Root, who played an unbeaten knock of 180 to help his side gain a 27-run lead. His efforts along with some pivotal contribution by Jonny Bairstow saw England eclipse India's 364 and finish at 391 in the first-inning.
