The dismissal, which can be branded as rather uncharacteristic, saw Dhoni not just being slow off the mark, but also not anticipating the throw at his end and eventually, was caught off guarded. (IPL 2017 - Schedule | Points Table | Photos)

The rare run out occurred in the 18th over of Supergiant's innings when Dhoni guided a Pat Cummins delivery to fine leg and looked to be jogging towards the non-striker's end to complete a single. On the contrary. Manoj Tiwary, who was running towards the danger end, was quick to respond to Dhoni’s call, but the latter appeared to be in no hurry to complete his run, and by the time he realised that he was in danger, Shami had dislodged the bails with a direct hit. “The run-out of Dhoni was the game-changer. I wanted to take a chance and have a shy at the bowler’s end. It was 50-50. Since Dhoni is a quick runner, getting him run-out was special.” Shami said on the incident.

Pune were left to score 77 runs off the last 48 balls with Ben Stokes and Tiwary in the middle. It did not turn out to be a straightforward chase despite Delhi's sloppiness on the field. Tiwary was dropped twice but still was not able to take his side home.

Needing an improbable 25 off the last over, Tiwary made things interesting with sixes off the first two balls before being bowled by Pat Cummins, as Pune finished their chase 7 runs short of Delhi's total of 168.

With the loss, Pune remain third in the points table and will have a must win tie against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.
