Former India captain Virat Kohli scored his first Test century after 1205 days against Australia in the fourth Test Match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. Virat last scored a ton in Test cricket way back in 2019 against Bangladesh in Pink Ball Test at the Eden Gardens Stadium, Kolkata. With this hundred, Virat also reached 75th international tons, only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 100 centuries.

On Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Kohli resumed his innings at 59 not out. However, he added only 29 runs to his score in the session, making him 88 not out by the time the players left the field for lunch. This was an unusual approach for Kohli, known for his aggressive game, but losing Ravindra Jadeja early on the fourth morning and news of Shreyas Iyer being taken for scans due to back pain made him gauge the situation carefully. Wicketkeeper KS Bharat joined Kohli, but India was still behind by 118 runs at 362/4 at lunch.
Stand-in skipper Steve Smith's tactics made run-making difficult for India, requiring Kohli and Bharat to bide their time and preserve wickets while upping the scoring rate to take the lead quickly, with only one day left in the match after Sunday. Bharat hit Cameron Green for two consecutive sixes and a four off a no-ball in the same over, shifting the momentum in India's favour, but he was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for 44, caught by Peter Handscomb at short-leg. Kohli's patient Test century finally arrived off the 241st ball he faced with just five fours.
Kohli's century was his eighth in Tests against Australia, matching Sunil Gavaskar's record, with Sachin Tendulkar holding the record at 11. This century was especially significant for Kohli, as it had been over three years since his last Test century. The four-match series currently stands 2-1 in favour of India, who will retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, but a win in the final match is crucial for India to secure a spot in the WTC final against Australia.
