Arif was arrested from Johripur Puliya, Bhagirathi Vihar, here last night, DCP (Northeast) Ajit Kumar Singla said.

Arif allegedly hit his wife on her head multiple times with a stone on the intervening night of December 16 and 17, Singla said.

Their minor children were also present during the incident and in their statement in the court, they said their parents had a fight after which their father assaulted their mother and crushed her head with a stone, the officer said, adding he was absconding after committing the crime.

Sources were deployed and information was collected to nab Arif. The accused kept changing his location but he was traced and arrested, said the officer.

"During interrogation, Arif told police that he was drunk when his wife started quarrelling with him over some domestic issues. He got enraged and crushed his wife's head with a stone lying nearby," the officer added.
