The party said that he worked well and humbly accepted defeat. "Rahul Gandhi campaigned with dignity and humbly accepted defeat after the results," Congress leader Anand Sharma said.

He also criticised the manner in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP campaigned for the polls. "PM and the entire cabinet was there. BJP campaigned at a scale which was never witnessed before. Still, their voting share went down by 11%, we gained 2/3rd majority in rural Gujarat including Saurashtra, though not much in urban area," he claimed.

Earlier in the day, Rahul had said that the results show that a question has been raised on Modi's credibility. "Questions have been raised on Modiji's credibility. His credibility is at stake," Rahul said.

Thanking the people of Gujarat for all the love, he said: "People of Gujarat gave me a lot of love. They taught me that any amount of anger and money cannot defeat love. Gujarat has given the message to Modiji and the BJP that this anger will not help them in any way," Rahul had said.
