New Delhi, Dec 02: In the backdrop of assembly elections to five states, Parliament is meeting today for its Winter Session.
Despite political acrimony which could be expected in the aftermath of poll results, a heavy agenda awaits the truncated session which will last till December 23.
On the opening day today, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are likely to adjourn after paying tributes to Union Minister Murasoli Maran, who died in Chennai last week after a prolonged illness.
According to Parliamentary sources, 54 items -- 17 bills pending in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, 30 new bills, one financial item and six items of non-legislative business, would be taken up in both the Houses during the 16 sittings spread over a period of 22 days.
The Prevention Of Terrorism (POTA) (Amendment) Bill, Delimitation (Amendment) Bill, the Indian Telegraph (Amendment) Bill, the Taxation (Amendment) Bill, the Indian Medicine Central Council (Amendment) Bill, the Representation of the Peoples (Amendment) Bill and the National Tax Tribunal Bill would be introduced to replace ordinances.
The Constitution (85th Amendment) Bill to provide reservation of seats for women in Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies is also slated for introduction.
