Home Minister L K Advani on Tuesday said BJP would abide by whatever ruling is given by the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha on the modalities of discussion on the Gujarat issue.
“We would accept whatever the ruling given by the chair and respect the parliamentary practices and norms so that the normal sitting of the House is resumed,” Advani told members of the parliamentary party at its weekly meeting. Referring to Gujarat developments and the violence that has rocked the state, Advani, who chaired the meeting in the absence of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, said revenge will not help in healing the wounds.
Addressing the meeting, former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel, who recently became member of Rajya Sabha, alleged that Congress was provoking people of one community against another. Patel outlined the various measures taken by the state government to restore normalcy.
Party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters after the meeting that members expressed concern over the hike in postal rates and that it was affecting the common man. They wanted steps be taken to alleviate the difficulties.
Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan assured members that he would take up the matter with finance minister Yashwant Sinha and see what steps can be taken in this regard, Malhotra said. Vajpayee could not attend the meeting as he was having meetings with several foreign dignitaries who are currently visiting this country, the spokesman said.
