Within months of the Republic Day tragedy, Gujarat prepares itself to face yet another disaster. The state is on red alert in the wake of the cyclonic storm that looms large on its forsaken horizon. According to the Meteorological Department, the cyclone is 500 kms away from the Gujarat coast and would hit the coastal areas approximately by Saturday.

The factual details of the cyclone portray a potential tale of terror and destruction. Heading towards Gujarat at a speed of 12 kmph, the cyclone is reported to have a wind velocity of around 220-240 kmph within its radius. Winds are expected to blow at around 100 kmph when the cyclone reaches within 250-300 kms from the Gujarat coast. In view of the impending danger, the authorities have already alerted the Navy, the Airforce and the Coast Guards. In addition to this, twelve units have already been formed for relief work.

Ahmedabad district authorities have ordered villagers on the coastline to vacate their homes as soon as possible. The Kandla and Magdalla ports have been closed. Water has already flooded Valsad, a low lying area on the Gujarat-Maharashtra border.

Though residents of six villages have been evacuated to safer places, reports say that arrangements made for their food and basic necessities leave much to be desired. Latest reports say that the cyclone has shifted course slightly, but the meteorological department said it is impossible to predict the course conclusively.

In the meantime, Gujarat is waiting with its fingers crossed and a prayer on its lips.
