Bangalore, Jan 23: In the wake of a series of militants' diktats threatening women in Jammu and Kashmir, chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today dismissed suggestions that women were living under the threat of ultras' gun in his state. "That is not the case," he said.
At an interaction with the Confederation of Indian Industry members here, he said women had suffered a lot during the turmoil and his government had decided to recruit a large number of them into the Kashmir police.
Women were coming forward to take part in developmental activities, Sayeed said.
Mehbooba Sayeed, Sayeed's daughter and vice-president of People's Democratic Party which is leading the coalition in Jammu and Kashmir, said the media was taking the threats by militants to women to wear burkhas "too far."
"I don't think any woman has taken it seriously," she said.
About the recent killings of three women by militants, she said, "it has nothing to do with burkhas." Bureau Report
